Easter is just around the corner and I wanted to share my family's tradition for decorating eggs. In all my searches, I haven't met anyone else who makes Easter eggs like these. I believe it was originally a German tradition, and it was passed on to us via my mom's vonRosenberg side of the family. In a way they are similar to Mexican cascarones, which are real eggs filled with confetti meant for smashing over someone's head around Easter time; however, the eggs my family makes are filled with candy and decorated with a colorful tissue paper 'skirt', not meant for smashing. :)

To make these special eggs, you must first carefully crack off the pointed end of the egg shell. This is where the candy will enter! I usually use a knife to tap around the edge. It won't be perfect.

Next, you may dye the eggs in whatever method you choose. I like the simple, old fashion vinegar and food coloring method since it's always on hand. Simply boil a pot of water and add 1/2 cup to a bowl with 1 teaspoon of vinegar and the food coloring of your choice.

After your eggs are dyed and dried, you may fill them with candy! I use wrapped candy.

The last step is probably the most involved. In order to make the tissue paper skirt, you will need two 4x4 inch tissue paper squares per egg. Fold the two papers diagonally 4 times so that you end up with a small triangle. Cut fringes into the widest part of the triangle. Do not cut the point or cut too close to the point! It's basically the same idea as making paper snowflakes. Once you've done this, open them up and it should look kind of like a flower shape. Add some glue around the bottom edge of your egg and press on. Usually the tissue paper is thin enough for the glue to go through both layers.

And now you're ready for an Easter egg hunt!
